Owen Johnston is a proud Haudenosaunne father and husband, residing on Neyaashiinigmiing with his wife and 2 daughters. He has a deep commitment to both his family and community.  

As the Recruitment Lead for the Canadian Union of Skilled Workers, he plays a crucial role in strengthening and diversifying the skilled trades workforce. Owen is dedicated to fostering a culture of inclusion and ensuring that underrepresented communities, particularly Indigenous peoples, have equal access to career opportunities in the trades. 

Alongside his union work, he serves as a Nuclear Construction Health and Safety Specialist, where he champions safety and the well-being of workers in high-risk environments. His expertise in this field ensures the adherence of rigorous safety standards within the complex and highly technical nuclear industry. 

A passionate educator, Owen is also an Advanced Fire Instructor at Georgian College’s Centre for Marine Training and Research. With over 25 years experience in the field, he is a Pro Board-certified Fire Instructor dedicated to training the next generation of Indigenous firefighters with the highest standards of expertise. 

A committed advocate for the advancement of First Nations education, Owen is particularly focused on increasing opportunities for Indigenous youth to enter and excel in the skilled trades, aiming to build a more equitable and sustainable future.
