A member of Cote First Nation, Michelle Brennan was born in Winnipeg and grew up moving between Winnipeg and Yorkton, Saskatchewan, before making her home in Ontario. Largely self-taught, she ran her own graphic design studio while still in college — an early sign of the entrepreneurial, build-it-yourself instinct that has shaped her career ever since. From there her path took an unexpected turn into construction, where she managed projects and delivered the health and safety training and orientations that keep crews safe on major Toronto projects, including Toronto Pearson International Airport and TTC rail infrastructure. These were demanding, constantly changing environments, and the work taught her how large, complicated undertakings actually get delivered: through discipline, accountability, and people who are given a real chance to do the job.

She carries that same conviction into Maverick Gardner Pathways North, the Indigenous-majority-owned company she co-founded and now leads. MGPN brings Indigenous people into Canada’s technology economy by hiring the people it trains and moving them into real, paid digital careers — in IT support, cybersecurity, and quality assurance — without asking them to leave home to do it. For Michelle, training was never the point in itself. The point was a job, a career, and the chance for opportunity to take root in a community rather than drain out of it.

That belief is rooted in where the work begins. MGPN’s proving ground is Grahamdale, Manitoba, in the Interlake — a gateway to the province’s north, within close reach of First Nations communities including Pinaymootang, Little Saskatchewan, Lake St. Martin, and Dauphin River. Manitoba is the first arm of a reach meant to extend much further north, and because the work is digital, a young person no longer has to choose between staying in their community and building a future in technology. Grahamdale is the first community. It is not the last.

For Michelle, none of this is abstract. She left the prairies as a young woman because, back then, opportunity meant leaving — and she co-founded MGPN to prove it no longer has to.
