Biography
Eugene Berryman-Kamp B.M.S, CMInstD Te Arawa me Mataatua ngā waka, Ngāti Kea Ngāti Tuara, Ngāti Whakaue, Ngāti Pukeko, Ngati Awa, Ngāti Manawa ngā iwi. Te Arawa and Mataatua are the canoes that carried my ancestors to Aotearoa New Zealand, I whakapapa (have genealogy) to 5 tribes in the centre of Te Ika a Maui, the North island.
Raised in Rotorua by my koroua and kuia (grandparents) I graduated from Waikato University with a Bachelor of Management Studies. In my corporate career I worked in multinational sales, marketing and market research roles in New Zealand and the United Kingdom. With my wife Tina and our tamariki (children) Rawiri, Mikaere and Māia we returned to Rotorua, my hometown, where I have worked in the health and iwi (tribal) environmental and social service sectors.
I was CEO of Health Rotorua Primary Health Organisation and have worked as a Portfolio Manager and Māori health project manager for Lakes District Health Board. My previous role was CEO for Te Arawa River Iwi Trust, a post treaty settlement Iwi environmental agency involved in the restoration of the Waikato river.
My current role is Director Te Mana o Te Wai (which puts the needs of the water first in resource management considerations) and Implementation Partnerships at Manatu mo te Taiao, the Ministry for Environment.
A chartered member of the Institute of Directors, I am on a number of hauora (health) boards such as Korowai Aroha Health Centre (Kaupapa Maori primary care – Chair), Te Arawa Whānau Ora (Health and social service provider collective – Deputy Chair), Te Rau Ora Ltd (Māori Mental Health and Addictions workforce centre – Deputy Chair), PHARMAC (NZ Pharmaceutical Purchasing Agency) Maori Advisory Committee – Co chair and QE Health Ltd (Rehabilitation Hospital – Chair). I visited First nation tribes in the USA in 2018 / 2019 and was an inaugural member and am on the NZ Advisory committee of the Indigi-X global Indigenous professional exchange, working on projects focused on clean energy and fisheries co-management.
A summary of my experience is provided over the page and with whatever time is left over I enjoy long distance motorcycle riding, being a Te Arawa waka taua kaihoe (war canoe paddler), mountain biking and am a semi decent trout fisherman, even if I say so myself.
