Dan joined Canderel in May 2017 as Managing Director of Development based in Calgary, Alberta. Primarily responsible for all aspects of the development process, strategic planning, key hires and team building, acquisitions, negotiations on real estate development.  Dan works closely with the CEO and oversees the day-to-day management of the development project from project planning and financial structuring through infrastructure and vertical development construction and closeout of land leases 

Prior to joining Canderel, Dan founded and managed New Urban Development, a real estate development firm focused on urban revitalization and mixed-use projects. His expertise ranges from acquisition, joint venture development, redevelopment and management of urban real estate including commercial, office, retail, residential, and hotel projects.  

New Urban founded and develops shared-equity attainable housing in partnership with INHOUSE Society, a non-profit organization that provides a unique shared equity home ownership program for moderate income earners, bridging the gap between the rental and sale market and help provide affordable housing options in high-cost metropolitan centres.   

Prior to forming New Urban Development, Dan held key management positions with major real estate developers in Canada and the United States. 

Dan Van Leeuwen holds a Bachelor’s degree in Geography and Urban Planning from the University of Waterloo. He holds affiliations with the Urban Land Institute and the International Council of Shopping Centers.
