Nikki van Oirschot (Anishinaabe name Mashkawizii Nendamowin Kwe), was elected as Chief of Caldwell First Nation on September 14, 2024 after serving a term as Councillor (2021-2024). The election marks a significant step in her longstanding commitment to the community and her dedication to fostering growth and prosperity within the Nation.

As a proud citizen of Caldwell First Nation, Nikki is a member of the Mikinaak dodem (turtle clan). Her connection to the community runs deep, with active participation in band functions and meetings for many years. Her leadership journey began with her role as Director of Operations for 3.5 years prior to her election to the Council in 2021.

Academically, Nikki holds an Honours Bachelor of Arts Degree in Public Administration and Governance from Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU). Her achievements in her undergrad include:

• 2023 Faculty of Arts Gold Medal (the university’s highest academic honour) – 4.20 GPA
• Gerda Kaegi Award (for research on First Nation Governance)
• David Crombie Achievement Award (for enthusiasm for the study of public administration and community engagement)
• Caroline Wheeler Award (support for fellow students and diligence and commitment to one’s studies)

She received her Professional Master of Public Administration (with distinction) from Queen’s University (2025), further solidifying her expertise and interest in governance and public administration.

Nikki’s professional background is extensive, with roles such as Chief of Staff for the Grand Council Chief at Anishinabek Nation (June 2021-June 2024), where she was instrumental in advancing provincial and federal partnerships, mandates, governance, accountability, policy development, research and development for educational and vocational partnerships, and more. As Caldwell’s Director of Operations (2018-2021), she was instrumental in increasing staff from six to over fifty in three years, opening Caldwell’s restaurant and reopening its marina, spearheading Caldwell’s vineyard, initiating environmental protections, securing funding for Caldwell’s on-reserve housing development, and much more. Her experience also includes administrative and technical services roles at the tribal council level in CMHC housing programs and water and wastewater operator training coordination and delivery.

Nikki is a contract professor at TMU through First Nations Technical Institute in the Public Administration and Governance undergrad program, teaching Academic Research and Writing, Human Rights in the Indigenous Context, and Public Administration Processes and Institutions.

Throughout her career, Nikki has demonstrated a robust understanding of governance, management, and community development. Her dedication to ethical leadership, integrity, and continuous learning underscores her approach to serving Caldwell First Nation and beyond. She is passionate about enhancing the Nation’s capacity, ensuring the community’s voice is heard, and working collaboratively towards a prosperous future.

Nikki’s vision for Caldwell First Nation is deeply rooted in Anishinaabe laws and principles with a commitment to sovereignty and self-reliance. Her leadership aims to foster education, economic development, and cultural preservation, ensuring that the Nation thrives for generations to come. Her personal experiences enrich her leadership, providing her with a grounded perspective on the needs and aspirations of Caldwell First Nation members.

As an artist and small business owner, her spare time is often spent creating stained glass art, fused glass artwork, pottery, and beading.
