Christine Walkem is Chief of Cook’s Ferry Indian Band, one of 15 Nlaka’pamux Bands in located in the Thompson and Nicola Valley’s of the Interior of British Columbia. Chirstine grew up in the Spences Bridge and surrounding communities. She grew up listening to stories of multiple forms of economic activities within the area that supported the community including logging, rail line work, multiple gas stations, tourism, and fishing. Stories of a thriving community along Highway 1 until the Coquihalla Highway was built and crushed the economic activity for the corridor.

Entering leadership 12 years ago, first on council and now in her sixth year as Chief, she has a passion in providing economic opportunities for her community. Through economic activities communities and their members grow. Providing opportunities to members provides independence and self sufficiency. Chief Walkem believes everyone has purpose and through economic activity, members are enabled to build on their purpose and continue their healthy living.

Chief Walkem looks at situations holistically, often seeking opportunities out of disaster. The Atmospheric River Event was a prime example, with the devastation of Highways throughout our Nation, and a large portion within our community directly. With the pursuit to be involved in the work that would be going on, every community member that wanted to work was working. Beyond working, members have built confidence and secured long term employment afterward. These are proud successes for Chief Walkem.
